DESCRIPTION:Perspectives in Global Health Equity: Distinguished Faculty Seminar Series \nHosted by Rutgers Global Health Institute \n  \nDr. Carlos Brites\, MD\, PhD\, Professor of Infectious Diseases\, Federal University of Bahia \n“HTLV-1: Co-infections and the Quest for Effective Treatment” \nDr. Brites is a Brazilian physician-scientist and infectious disease specialist internationally recognized for his work on HIV\, HTLV-1\, and viral coinfections. He is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Federal University of Bahia and leads the Laboratório de Pesquisa em Infectologia (LAPI) in Salvador\, Brazil. His research has focused extensively on the clinical and immunological consequences of HIV/HTLV-1 coinfection\, immune activation\, retroviral pathogenesis\, and antiretroviral therapy outcomes. Over the course of his career\, Dr. Brites has contributed to major advances in understanding how HTLV-1 modifies HIV disease progression\, inflammation\, and survival outcomes\, particularly in endemic regions of Brazil. His work has also explored the role of integrase inhibitors such as dolutegravir in HTLV-1 infection and proviral load suppression.  In addition to his research contributions\, Dr. Brites has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases and has been an important leader in retrovirology and infectious disease research throughout Latin America. \n📅 Thursday\, June 11 12:00pm \n🏢 IFH\, 3rd Floor Conference Room\, 112 Paterson Street\, NJ \n💻 Virtual option available upon request – contact Florencia fmodernel@globalhealth.rutgers.edu
