BMIHAI Membership

The Rutgers Center for Biomedical Informatics and Health Artificial Intelligence (BMIHAI) is built on the collective expertise of a diverse community of researchers, clinicians, educators, and trainees. Membership in BMIHAI connects you to a growing network of scholars at the intersection of data science, computational medicine, and health AI, and positions you to contribute to work that is shaping the future of health care.

Membership is open to Rutgers faculty, affiliated investigators, and trainees whose scholarship, clinical practice, or research activities align with the Center’s mission. Applications are accepted from individuals internal or external to the University, and participation is entirely voluntary.

Membership Categories

BMIHAI recognizes three categories of membership, each designed to reflect the diversity of ways investigators and trainees engage with biomedical informatics and health AI. Category assignments are made by the BMIHAI leadership on review of each application. Accepted members are then recommended for the same level of membership for the Institute for Health, Healthcare Policy, and Aging Research (IFH).

Because BMIHAI is a Center within IFH, all BMIHAI members are required to hold a concurrent IFH membership at the same tier. BMIHAI membership does not replace or supersede IFH membership; rather, the two operate in parallel. Many of the benefits listed in these guidelines are delivered through or coordinated with IFH and are contingent on maintaining active IFH membership in good standing. Applicants approved for BMIHAI Associate or Adjunct Membership will be nominated for the same tier IFH Membership by BMIHAI leadership.

IFH membership is governed by the IFH Faculty Membership: Eligibility, Benefits, and Responsibilities document, as maintained and updated by the IFH Membership Committee. Key provisions applicable to IFH and BMIHAI members are outlined on the IFH website here. Membership must be approved by both BMIHAI and IFH.

Core Member

Established IFH and BMIHAI faculty are Core Members whose research focuses on biomedical informatics, health AI, computational medicine, clinical informatics, bioinformatics, translational bioinformatics, or population health informatics. A BMIHAI Core Member:

Is an author on at least three peer-reviewed papers published within the past three years that are significantly relevant to biomedical informatics, health AI, or a related discipline (in-press publications are considered); and
Is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) of an independent research program (lab, clinical, or population science) with relevance to biomedical informatics or health AI and PI of an active R01-equivalent peer-reviewed grant as defined by the NIH, or is national PI of a health informatics or AI-focused clinical trial administered through the Center; or
Holds a significant leadership role in the BMIHAI Center.

Core members actively participate in reviewing grants, mentoring trainees, facilitating educational workshops, and other key BMIHAI initiatives as directed by Center leadership.

Associate Member

Associate membership will be considered for Rutgers faculty if the applicant meets criteria 1, 2, or 3:

Contributes to clinical informatics or AI-driven clinical research by serving as key personnel of a relevant research project within the past three years; or
Contributes to teaching health and translational informatics or AI at Rutgers; or
Is a significant contributor to clinical trials or health system improvement initiatives within the last five years that leverage data science, AI, electronic health records, or related methods, including studies accruing at Rutgers University Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, or affiliated Rutgers Health sites.

Applicants that are Associate members should also actively participate in reviewing grants, selecting or mentoring students, facilitating educational workshops, and other key BMIHAI initiatives as directed by Center leadership.

Adjunct Member

Adjunct membership will be considered for applicants external to Rutgers, contributing to biomedical informatics, health AI, computational medicine, or health informatics education. Adjunct Member status will be considered if the applicant meets criteria 1, 2, or 3:

Is an author on at least two peer-reviewed papers with significant focus on biomedical informatics, health AI, or a related field published within the past five years (in-press publications are considered); or
Is the PI or key personnel of sponsored research in biomedical informatics or health AI within the past three years; or
Has emerging interest in health AI or biomedical informatics and is either actively conducting research or engaged in educational and/or mentorship activities in this area.

Applicants that are Adjunct members should also actively participate in selecting or mentoring students, facilitating educational workshops, and other key BMIHAI initiatives as directed by Center leadership.

Trainee

The Center accepts applications from postdoctoral students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers at Rutgers who are actively engaged in research and seeking expert mentors. Trainees will be considered if the applicant meets criteria 1 and 2:

As a student, is enrolled actively in either a full-time undergraduate program at Rutgers University, a graduate degree program (master’s or doctoral) at Rutgers University, or holds a current postdoctoral position at Rutgers University or an affiliated Rutgers Health Institution.
Is actively engaged in a research project under the direct supervision of a BMIHAI Core or Adjunct Member, is formally collaborating with a BMIHAI Core, Associate or Adjunct Member, is a current BMIHAI fellow, OR is participating in the BMIHAI Bootcamp.

Trainees are not members of BMIHAI or IFH but can apply for mentorship from the Center to support their research and career growth. It is expected that Trainees who receive mentors would be eligible for Adjunct or Associate Membership within 5 years.

Benefits & Privileges

BMIHAI membership connects investigators and trainees to a robust ecosystem of resources, collaboration opportunities, and career development pathways. Benefits are structured by membership category, with Core and Associate Members eligible for the full suite of Center services.

All Members

Every BMIHAI member, regardless of category, is eligible for the following:

Participation in Center-wide seminars, symposia, and retreats, including the annual BMIHAI Symposium and the Rutgers Health AI Virtual Seminar Series
Access to intramural funding opportunities provided by the Center (excluding pilot projects designated for Core and Associate Members)
Announcement of new research developments and clinical breakthroughs through Rutgers IFH and BMIHAI communications and marketing channels

Associate Members

Associate Members receive all benefits listed above and with IFH Associate Membership, plus the following additional privileges:

Consideration for nomination to national funding opportunities that limit the number of applications per institution, including career development awards, foundation grants, and strategic AI and informatics opportunities identified by the co-Directors
Access to BMIHAI Living Labs infrastructure, shared data environments, and research computing resources at subsidized rates
Eligibility for Center Pilot Grant funding designated for intramural projects advancing biomedical informatics and health AI research

Eligibility

Center membership is available to Rutgers faculty and affiliated investigators whose research, clinical practice, or scholarship intersects with biomedical informatics, health AI, computational medicine, clinical research informatics, public health informatics, bioinformatics, or related disciplines. Trainees in search of a mentor must be enrolled graduate students or postdoctoral researchers actively engaged in BMIHAI-affiliated research. Applications are accepted from individuals only.

Required Application Materials

Completed BMIHAI membership application form
Current curriculum vitae
A statement (250 words or less) that addresses their interest in joining BMIHAI or requesting a mentor as a trainee, their research focus, and/or potential collaborations with BMIHAI members

Review Process

Applications are reviewed by BMIHAI Leadership, who recommend membership status and programmatic alignment. Final decisions on membership, including initial approval, category assignment, and any changes in status, are made by Center leadership in partnership with the IFH Membership Committee.
