We are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Shan Qiao, Associate Professor, Department of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior, University of South Carolina, who will discuss “Health disparities in the context of COVID-19: A Big Data approach.”
Dr. Shan Qiao is Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion, Education and Behavior at University of South Carolina (USC). She obtained her PhD degree in Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in 2012. Dr. Qiao’s academic training has provided her with an excellent background in multiple social science disciplines (B.A. in sociology, M.A. in anthropology, and Ph.D. in public health). Dr. Shan has been engaged in HIV prevention and treatment studies since 2006 with foci on behavior, clinical outcomes and psychosocial wellbeing issues including disclosure, stigma, resilience, and chronic stress. She has been working with diverse priority populations including female sex workers, MSM, children affected by HIV, and people living with HIV in China, Zambia, and United States. She is expanding her research in exploring health disparities and inequality using Big Data approach. Dr. Qiao has secured three NIH grants (1R01, 2R21), two CDC grants, one NIMH contract as PI, and been engaged in 7 NIH grants as Co-investigator. She won the David Rosenstein Award at the annual conference of American Public Health Association (APHA) in 2013, International Scholarship Award at the 20th International AIDS Conference in 2014, and Chinese University of Hong Kong Award for Visiting Scholars in 2017. She was also selected to receive Breakthrough Star Award 2020 and Ann Johnson Institute Magellan Faculty Fellow 2021 at USC.
