Hilary Greaves, PhD
Hilary Greaves is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, and until recently served as Founding Director of the Global Priorities Institute at Oxford. Dr. Greaves received her BA in physics and philosophy from the University of Oxford with First-Class Honors and then her PhD in Philosophy from Rutgers University. She is internationally known and was a visiting professor at the Institute for Future Studies in Stockholm (2022-2023) and at the University of Michigan (winter 2016) and a visiting fellow at Australian University (summer 2015).
She is the recipient of many prizes and awards including Leverhulme Research Fellowship and Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant, British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award, Oxford Teaching Excellence Award among others on the topics of population ethics, rational philanthropy, and human rights for future generations.
Dr. Greaves has published broadly across moral philosophy, including on issues relating to population ethics, moral uncertainty, optimum population size, discounting future health and well-being, climate change, and artificial intelligence. She teaches and supervises undergraduate, graduate, and philosophy doctoral students at the University of Oxford. Examples of her coursework include Moral Philosophy, Plato’s Republic, Ethics, Metaphysics, Philosophy, and Economics of the Environment.
