Thomas I. Mackie (Joint-Ph.D., Sociology and Social Policy, Graduate School of Arts and Science and Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Systems and Policy, School of Public Health, Rutgers University. Dr. Mackie’s research leverages interdisciplinary and mixed methods to bring new evidence to address policy and practice dilemmas for children and adolescents. His research involves the examination of natural experiments (both policy and practice innovations) across the health, mental health, and public health sectors. Specific areas of inquiry include investigations of the implementation and impact of federal and state policies, guidelines, and evidence-based practices on service use and patient-centered outcomes. His current research portfolio employs mixed methods to examine the comparative effectiveness and implementation of innovations in an array of policy and practice arenas, including pediatric mental and behavioral health services, systems of care, and psychotropic medication use. Having been invited to present at regional, state, and national child welfare conferences, Dr. Mackie routinely translates his research evidence to policymakers and practitioners responsible for mental health oversight among children involved in public sector systems. His research has been published in a variety of peer reviewed journals, such as Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research, Social Science and Medicine, Children and Youth Services Review, and Journal of Clinical Lipidology.
