Individuals with opioid and other substance use disorders are overrepresented in correctional settings. Risk of relapse and adverse health events is high following prison release, with risk of fatal overdose 129 times greater in the 2 weeks post-release than in the general population. To reduce these harms, Rutgers Health University Correctional Healthcare, in collaboration with state partners, implemented two novel interventions in the state prison system: pre-release medication for opioid use disorder and the Intensive Recovery Treatment Support (IRTS) peer health navigator program. During this seminar, the presenters will discuss early findings from their mixed-methods studies on the implementation and outcomes of these interventions. Donald (Rusty) Reeves, MD, is Director of Psychiatry for Rutgers-University Correctional Health Care since 2005 to Present. He is a Professor of Psychiatry, Rutgers University – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and is creator and director of the School’s forensic psychiatry fellowship. Peter Treitler is a research specialist at the Rutgers Institute for Health, Center for Health Services Research.
